Aalsmeer Flower Auction – Amsterdam

Before we left Amsterdam a couple of days ago we visited the Aalsmeer Flower Auction. It’s the largest flower auction in the world. The building is the largest building by footprint in the world, covering 518,000m². Flowers from all over the world are traded every day. Around 20 million flowers are sold daily. The auction is set up as a Dutch auction in which the price starts high and works its way down. Bidders get only a few seconds to bid on the flowers before they are sold. An amazing place!
We then visited a cut flower production site which showed us the process that the flowers go through before getting to the Aalsmeer Flower Auction.

Keukenhof Gardens

Today we spent a few hours at the Netherlands premier flower exhibition, Keukenhof. I’m no gardener but you could not be impressed and blown away with the display of tulips, daffodils and other flowers and the arrangements and colour combinations. It was truly breathtaking (and cold)!
